Young
people make up almost 20% of the world's population and 86% of them
live in the developing world. Youth will be the main motor for change
in the near future. Thus, the energy, motivation and creativity of
young people are essential assets to bringing about change at all
levels. All around the world, young people have shown outstanding
potential, creativity and promise in addressing environmental and
social concerns. Many
NGO organizations now gradually understand the role young people have
to play to achieve sustainable development through education and
youth-led development projects.
However, a more active participation of youth from all parts of the
world in all relevant levels of decision-making processes is urgently
needed because it affects our lives today and has implications for
our future.

To make sustainable development work, you have to involve the people
directly affected, more explicitly, youth. To some young people,
sustainable development is the existence of a common vision of a
future world where everyone knows how to read and there is no global
warming; a world where there is enough wealth for everyone to live
with dignity. For others, the priorities are equal opportunity,
poverty alleviation and literacy for all. In sum, the priority is
getting a chance to be the change.

Youth
are all principally concerned with how to turn talk into action. As
Sofie (age 19) from the United Kingdom said, 'You can save the
world, but it
doesn't have to be in a suit or in a conference hall€.That is to
say, in the words of Mahatma Gandhi, 'be the change you want to see
in this world€.
Young
people recognize sustainable development as a goal that requires the
creativity and courage of everyone. Young people will realize their
role by other young people's telling them of it,
but also by the older generations reminding them that they have that
role to fulfill.
